Individual Volunteering

Volunteer to give back to your community

If you have more time to give, think about grouping your time into hours. Please see below more information about the current individual volunteer opportunities we have.

Energy Action Redhill and Reigate (EARR) is a community benefit society, serving East Surrey.  Their mission is to make local buildings more sustainable by supporting energy efficiency measures and renewable energy.  They help local households keep their homes warmer for less, as well as helping to reduce the climate impact of domestic energy. They are looking for individuals to help deliver The Leaky Homes Roadshow this winter.  They are looking for individual volunteer assistants to support their Energy Champions when they undertake home energy visits.  You may be asked to help with several tasks (with supervision from the Lead Energy Champion): capturing information for the online questionnaire; taking thermal images, measuring the depth of loft insulation (or holding the ladder!) and chatting with the homeowner/tenant. They ask their volunteer assistants to sign up to a minimum of two sessions (4 surveys), and usually undertake two energy surveys per session.  This could take up to 3 hours, depending on where the surveys are.

During Winter (from November onwards) surveys take place in the evening between 6pm and 9pm to make the most of the thermal imaging.  However, they also offer some surveys during the daytime if this suits you better, in particular during the Summer and early Autumn.

Surrey Coalition of Disabled People (SCoDP) is a user led Disabled People’s organisation, run, and managed by disabled people, which means that their activities and priorities are set by people with lived experience of the services they receive and the barriers they face. Do you enjoy helping others? Are you confident with technology? Do you have 2-3 hours per week to spare? Many older people and people with disabilities experience difficulties getting online – our wonderful volunteers provide one-to-one support to help them with this. They are looking for individuals to become a Tech Angel Volunteer.

The Brigitte Trust is a independent registered charity offering free emotional support and practical help at home to people and their families facing cancer, MND, MS, heart and lung failure and other life-threatening illness. Do you have gift sets, chocolates, biscuits, novelty gifts, perfume, bubble bath, wine or spirits, jewellery, board games, unwanted gifts?  They are looking for donations to use in their future fundraisers for their Donated with Love Campaign.

One off Help VARB often receive requests for volunteers to help local charities on an ad-hoc basis. This is usually just for a day or two for a specific event or campaign. The actual activity that you will be asked to help with can vary. If you think this would suit you please register your interest and we will contact you when the opportunities come up, you can then decide if you would like to help out. This is a great way to volunteer if you do want to commit to a more regular volunteering opportunity.

Microvolunteering

Do you want to volunteer but don’t have enough time or are unable to commit to a long-term role?

Micro Volunteering is the answer – it’s a convenient and easy way to get involved as it can be done anytime, anywhere, with no commitment to repeat and with minimum formality.

There is a network of Volunteer Centres across Surrey (and the UK).

Many opportunities are only suitable if you can commit a reasonable amount of time.  This is because of the investment needed to train and supervise a new volunteer.  However, it is always worth asking about flexibility.

Points to Remember when Team Volunteering

  • Agree a date well in advance – to fit with you and your host

  • Think about the size of your team – sometimes smaller is better

  • Be clear on costs – there is a fixed charge for some team days, in particular for large teams, to cover staff time.  Some organisations may request a contribution towards materials.

  • Before the day – do you know where the activity will take place; who is your contact on the day; what clothes should be worn; are refreshments provided?

  • Volunteer safely – do you understand the risk assessment for the activity?  Is insurance in place?

  • Take lots of photos – share them with your colleagues, friends and family to generate great publicity for the charit
