Calling all charities in Reigate & Banstead – Tell us your Christmas List

Christmas is traditionally a time for giving and many charities experience an upsurge in donations around this time.  In order to capitalise on this public generosity, VARB is working alongside a group of local charities to help improve co-ordination of Christmas campaigns.

Money is still the preferred type of donation for many charities as it provides the maximum flexibility.   However many people like to get involved by giving gifts in-kind, in particular toys, presents and festive food.   VARB is interested in hearing from small local charities about the types of “in kind” donations that would be helpful for you at Christmas (and beyond).  We will then compile a “Christmas list” to be used in joint publicity to encourage more donations and also use the list within the voluntary sector to redistribute any surpluses.  Please contact nina@varb.org.uk for more details.

Other top tips generated from local experience (with special thanks to Stripey Stork and Loveworks for sharing):

  • Localgiving.org – is a great site for online fundraising and you can create appeal pages specifically for events like Christmas. The Grow Your Tenner appeal which starts mid-October each year is where donations up to £10 are doubled.
  • If you have access to lots of volunteers, there is an opportunity to fundraise in the Belfry shopping centre during December  by staffing the charity gift wrapping station.
  • The use of Amazon wish lists has proved very successful as a way to manage and promote a list of items you/your clients need.  It allows supporters to buy them and have them sent directly to you.
  • Whilst not free, In Kind Direct is a great resource for buying presents/supplies cheaply. It depends what has been donated as to what they have in stock, but it’s worth checking every few weeks.
